Yesterday, I worked with Nanuq in our Michigan apple orchard when I heard an animal cry. Initially, thought the sounds were coming from a bird, but after an hour the dog started getting curious. We walked towards the sounds and found a small kitten sitting under one of our apple trees near the street, crying.
The kitten was injured, her lower jaw, left eye and left ear had fresh wounds. Since there are no houses nearby, I assume that someone threw the cat out of a car window when driving by. Albeit this is only a speculation, it’s the only explanation I have for the kind of injuries he has.
It was too late in the day to take the kitten to a vet and we had to drive back to Chicago.
I took the kitten to the Uptown Animal Hospital this morning, where he got de-wormed and de-flead. The doctor was not concerned about the wounds, as they appear to be superficial and should heal quickly.
The kitten is approximately 7 weeks old. He is a happy and very cuddly cat, a small, black and gray tiger with beautiful markings. The doctor had difficulties hearing his heartbeat, because of the constant purring sounds he makes. His inner mechanics seem to work fine.
We would love to keep the kitten. The dilemma is that Nanuq is so eager to play with the kitten that we are pretty sure that he would seriously hurt/kill it. I think he sees a toy in the cat.
Right now, and until we find a good home for the cat, we have to keep the dogs apart from the him in our house and unfortunately we can only do so by keeping the cat in the bathroom.
Anyways, I know this is a strange story. Both of our dogs are adopted and we are the kind of people who catch mice with glue-traps and keep them in a tank throughout the winter, before letting them run free again. I grew up with animals and I love them very much. We will find a good home for cat.
We are happy to pay for his vaccinations, which he can not have done until he is 10 weeks old. We do not want any money/fees for the cat as our only concern is to find him a good home.

oh my gosh – I hate people doing such thing- I love you guys. I tell you- if we would live close together I would come and take the little sticky claw right away. What a sweetheart. I so hope you find a new and good home soon!!!

ein kurzes update:
gestern habe ich auf craigslist (lokale kleinanzeigen, online) drei leute in chicago gefunden, die eine katze möchten (und halbwegs artikuliert sind). der letzte blogeintrag war die nachricht welche ich rausgeschickt habe.
ein paar, welches ganz in der nähe wohnt hat sich innerhalb von 30 minuten zurück gemeldet. es ist ein ganz komisches gefühl eine katze zu verpimpen – man kommuniziert mit leuten, welche man nicht kennt und es geht um ‘treffen’, ‘besuchen’, ‘qualitäten’ und ‘körperfunktionen’ – konversationen irgendwo zwischen offener adoption und swingerclub. sehr schräg.
charlie geht es gut, obwohl er gestern abend beschlossen hat meine alten woll-pullover als pissoir statt als bett zu benutzen. auch fallen von ihm tote läuse ab wie nadeln von einem weihnachtsbaum im märz. yummy. er isst viel und wird selbstbewusster. heute morgen ist er mir am schlafanzugbein hochgeklettert, dann auf meinen rücken, um an meinem ohrläppchen zu kauen. ich weiss gar nicht wie man eine katze entfernt, ohne sich dabei die klamotten vom leib zu reissen.
behalten können wir ihn nicht, wegen der hunde, der fahrerei und irgendwann müssen wir ja auch unser bad wieder benutzen :) mal schaun wo wir ein gutes zu hause finden.
